Twycross Zoo AV and Lighting Control

Twycross Zoo was founded in 1963 near the village of Twycross in Leicestershire. In 1972 it became a charitable trust (The East Midland Zoological Society). The zoo attracts around 500,000 visitors a year. Twycross is notable for having the largest collection of primate species of any zoo in the world, outside Japan.

In September 2007, Twycross Zoo announced that it had received a grant of £3 million from the East Midlands Development Agency which helped it to achieve its fundraising target for a new £11 million visitor centre. The project transformed the main entrance to the zoo and features an eco-friendly building containing a gift shop, conference room, cafeteria and information about the zoo’s conservation work. The development also features a new enclosure for snow leopards and a large aviary. Construction started towards the end of 2008 and opened to the public in April 2010.

The project was completed by PV Audio Video, the Commercial arm of see-AV.

Client Brief

Our client wanted “state of the art” audio visual and lighting controls for visitors to experience a unique and desirable venue to host public and corporate events, as well as creating an environment that reflects the modern approach the zoo has taken with regards to the architectural design of the building.

Working with PV Audio Video

Working with PV Audio Video is a consultative experience; we take a brief only as an outlined goal. The real answer lies in talking, listening and working closely with the client to determine the future aims and uses of the system. PV Audio Video is ideally placed to present all of the appropriate options to a client both technical and non-technical to optimise the final project specification.

Our Approach

As part of the development of the new £11 million Himalaya Visitor Centre, PV Audio Video were asked to design, supply and install the audio visual and lighting control systems to key areas. The areas we were initially asked to cover were the visitor centre dining area, information desk digital signage and the purpose built conferencing suite with audio visual facilities and fully automated AV control. As the project progressed and our working relationship developed our client asked us to design and install further systems to other areas of the Zoo.

PV Audio Video worked closely with the client to design and provide the optimum system to meet both their current brief and future requirements and deliver high quality audio visual systems within the client’s budget whilst meeting exacting installation and health & safety standards. We designed and presented a number of appropriate systems to demonstrate to the client the various technologies available to them, with particular emphasis on key areas required within the new building.

Digital Signage

To fulfil our client’s requirements to provide digital signage displays to show electronic information, messaging and animation at various locations of the visitor centre and zoo, Onelan digital signage systems were specified to control the displays. Panasonic and Sanyo IP rated plasma and LCD screens were chosen for their image quality and ruggedness. The Onelan digital signage system provides a simple interface for the images to be changed with ease by the members of staff. Twycross were so impressed with the system, its capabilities and commercial benefits that it is has now been rolled out across the zoo.

Public Address System

A PA system was installed to the main visitor centre for public announcements, background music corporate events, seminars and public speakers and distributing the sound throughout the building. We provided a distributed speaker system powered by Cloud amplification and Community loudspeakers.

DMX Effects Lighting Control

Within the main visitor centre, featured displays required subtle lighting for evening and winter opening. Colour Wash LED’s and Gobo Projection moving head effects lights were installed both provided with DMX Control.

Manor House Alsager

Best Western Manor House Hotel Alsager

The Best Western Manor House Hotel close to Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe, and just minutes from the M6 motorway. Set in countryside on the Staffordshire-Cheshire border, the hotel originally extends from a 17th century farmhouse. Under new ownership major renovations to all the bedroom suites have taken place in the last quarter of 2013.

During January to March 2014 a major transformation has taken place to the hotel’s public areas with the refurbishment of the reception, restaurants, bars, outside areas, meeting and conference rooms.

Client Brief

As part of the refurbishment of the Manor House Hotel, PV Audio Video were asked to design, supply and install the conference and meeting room system, audio visual and CCTV systems to key areas of the hotel. We worked closely with the client to design and provide the optimum system to meet both their current brief and future requirements and deliver high quality audio video and security systems within the client’s expectations and budget.

Multifunctional Conference Suite

The new Conference Suite is designed to offer ‘state of the art’ multifunctional presentation capabilities. See-AV utilised the latest technology from Epsom Multimedia Systems using their latest range of Wireless WXGA Projectors, this allows any delegate to show presentations on the projector screen using any wireless or hard wired device such as iPhone, iPad, laptop or android device or any presentation system with HDMI video output . This facility really gives The Manor House Hotel the edge when competing against other conference centres offering older technology via hard wired presentation systems.

Hybrid Analogue and Digital IP CCTV System

The existing CCTV equipment was typical 10 year old technology using low resolution cameras and a DVR without internet access for remote monitoring, our brief was to update the complete system so that management could actually see real time high resolution images to essential areas of the hotel and grounds, we had to reuse most of the old coaxial cable as there were areas with no access to run new cables.

The system we specified was a Hybrid NVR with a 16TB memory which allowed See-AV to utilize both analogue and new 2 mega pixel IP cameras, the hotel then had the facility to have coverage of key areas giving full HD images which can be monitored both locally and remotely via internet access.

Hotel Distributed Music System

The existing PA and music equipment was a mixture of amplifiers and speakers playing un managed music to the bars, restaurants and function rooms around the hotel, the requirement of the hotel was to have a managed system capable of playing music from one centralized source or from local sources in each area.

See AV used mixer amps from British manufacturer Cloud using their renowned 46/50 series. Using this system allowed all the bars, restaurants and external areas to have the facility of independent music sources (including TV and radio) also the capability to have variable volume controls.

Windows on the Wild

State Of The Art Capabilities

The Windows on the Wild Conference Suite is designed to offer ‘state of the art’ multifunctional capabilities to cater for conferences for up to 100 delegates, it also features a full surround sound audio system to enhance HD video presentation for schools and educational presentations. High Resolution Multimedia

See AV utilised the latest technology from the Crestron family’s multimedia presentation system offering a complete presentation control and signal routing solution ideal for boardrooms, providing traditional video switching and digital audio processing including gated microphone inputs, balanced stereo audio, full 12-band parametric equalisation, a dedicated touch panel preview output, true native HD and high-res signal outputs.

Portable Controllers

The room is brought to life with a simple touch of the Crestron in-wall touch panel or hand held controller which is programmed to carry out all electronic functions of the room including lighting scenes, heating and ventilation, blind and curtain control, with high definition projection bringing the whole system to life.
