The brief
A customer who had recently moved into a new home wanted to transform a garage—previously used by the former owner for car storage—into a state-of-the-art home cinema. The space was ideal for a Dolby Atmos setup, featuring a generous width that allowed for an expansive screen, ensuring a truly cinematic experience.
With the room’s considerable length, we had the opportunity to take the design to the next level by incorporating a raised platform for a second row of seating. This tiered layout not only enhanced the viewing experience but also added to the authentic theater-like ambiance, making the most of the available space while ensuring optimal sightlines and immersive surround sound for all viewers.
In summary
Designing the audio for this home cinema came with a unique set of challenges due to the large glass windows and doors spanning both side walls of the garage-turned-cinema room. These structural elements meant that traditional in-wall speakers for the side surround channels were not an option. To overcome this, we utilized Monitor Audio’s in-ceiling speakers with an angled driver array, which creates a precise "spotlight" effect, directing mid-range and high-frequency sound into the listening area. This ensured optimal clarity and intelligibility, delivering an immersive surround sound experience without compromising the room’s layout.
For the front and rear walls, we applied an acoustic fabric finish, allowing us to create an exceptionally wide stereo image. Instead of solely relying on speakers hidden behind the acoustically transparent screen, we took advantage of the available space by constructing a custom-built stud wall at the front.
This design choice enabled us to integrate high-performance in-wall speakers while also incorporating two floor-standing Cynergy 15” subwoofers within the wall. These powerful subwoofers deliver deep, room-filling bass, making them our go-to choice whenever space allows for their installation.
To ensure effortless control and automation, we installed a fully customized RTi smart control system, providing the homeowner with a seamless, intuitive way to operate their cinema. The system included both an in-wall touchscreen panel and a handheld touchscreen remote, giving them complete control over every aspect of the room. With a single button press, the customer can power on all devices, close the curtains, and dim the lights to the perfect level, instantly setting the stage for a luxurious, immersive home cinema experience.
